Otherwise, just go observe some classes. That should tell you what you need to know.

Why would you want to be taught the old school way of training and not more of positive reinforcement? Your dog will do much better if you got training with better methods instead of your dog learning to fear you.

I agree wholeheartedly with DogsBestFriend. Koehler methods have been on their way out for years. Better methods of dog training have pretty much made Koehler obsolete and not as effective.
Perhaps you could research some of these other techniques before leaping into Koehler.

Go to http://www.akc.org or http://www.ukcdogs.com. Search the club listings for an obedience club in your area. The ukc site has the clubs listed under the dog events menu tab. Find a club and go observe the classes being taught. Check the website if they have one. For an example of a club go to http://www.tulsadogs.com. It’s the site of the Tulsa Dog Training Club.

hmmm.. In the UK I am not sure there is any ‘certified’ Koehler trainers like there is in US, but if you ring arround trainers and enquire they should tell you their method and maybe direct you to a trainer who does use it, I know there is an ex police dog handler in the North East who is now a dog trainer and I am pretty sure he uses the Koehler method or something similar, his details can be found in the Yellow Pages so look in there also.

I’ve got to also agree with Dogsbestfriend, there more rewarding ways to train your dog and they really do work, I suppose it depends more on if you believe in “the carrot or the stick”.
If you happen to live in a small town or village and can’t find a training class from a larger site, it’s always worth checking your local paper.
We took our beagle to some really simple basic training classes, he will come back and sit and this was adequate enough for us.

Look at the web page that bassetnut gave you, you will find it very useful. Please do not listen to people who talk negatively about the Koehler training methods they have no idea…. More dogs were trained using this style of training then any other style in the world. Bill Koehler is the father of modern day training and still the best way to train a dog in obedience and problem solving. Good luck to you!!
